(Please excuse my French translations. It's a combination of my GSCE and Google!!)

 1) Can you tell us about the development of The Secret Fire. Was it a collaborative effort from the beginning, did you both brainstorm ideas that formed the book slowly? Did either of you have a firm idea of how you wanted the book to look like and shared this with the other? / 

 Comment êtes-vous parvenues à l'élaboration de The Secret Fire - Le Feu Secret ? S'agissait-il d'un projet commun dès le début, à chacune lancer des idées qui ont formé le livre petit à petit ? Ou bien l'une de vous avait-elle une image bien précise de l'intrigue et décida de la partager avec l'autre ?

CJ: It was a team work from the beginning. We spoke about the book in Paris, and then came up with a draft over email very quickly. 

C'état un travail d'équipe depuis le début. Nous avions parlé du livre à Paris et ensuite on en a fait une ébauche par mail, ensemble. 

2)   The Book is called The Secret Fire (and yes this is a bit of a stretch but go with it) SO tell us a secret... /  Le livre s'intitule The Secret Fire - Le Feu Secret. C'est peut-être un peu tiré par les cheveux mais, racontez-nous un secret... 

CJ: When I worked for the government I took part in spy training exercises. Which makes me basically ¼ spy. 

Lorsque j'ai travaillé pour le gouvernement, j'ai pris part dans un programme d'exercices d'espionnage. Ce qui fait que je suis en partie espionne.

3)   Describe your experience of co-writing the book in five words (amazing, fun, awesome, incredible & crazy are not possible answers!) /  Décrivez votre expérience de co-écriture en cinq mots.

CJ: Exciting, challenging, dangerous, exhilarating, scary.

Excitant, challenging, dangereux, stimulant, effrayant.

4)   Did you find it difficult to co-write a book with an author who writes in another language? And how was the process overall? /  Fut-il difficile de co-écrire un livre avec un auteur qui n'écrit pas dans la même langue que la vôtre ? Comment le tout s'est-il déroulé globalement ? 

CJ: Because we weren’t on deadline at the beginning – we wrote without a book contract – we could take our time. That meant we had the chance to find our way. Carina speaks fluent French, and has an amazing vocabulary. But she found she couldn’t write in English. So she wrote in French, and then translated her work into English. This slowed the process down, so she started sending her chapters to me in the original French, so I could get to work on my own chapters. Over time, we started sharing the translation duties to speed things up. It took us a little time to find our system, but we’re a like a well-oiled machine now.

Puisque nous n'avions pas de date butoir au début - nous avons écrit le premier tome sans contrat de publication - nous avons pu prendre notre temps. Cela signifie que nous avions la chance de trouver notre rythme, notre façon de faire. Carina parle anglais couramment et elle a énormément de vocabulaire. Mais elle s'est rendue compte qu'elle ne pouvait pas écrire directement en anglais. Alors elle écrivait en français puis traduisait ses chapitres en anglais. Cela ralentissait notre processus d'écriture alors elle a commencé à m'envoyer ses chapitres originaux, en français, afin que je puisse enchaîner avec mes propres chapitres. Au fil du temps, nous nous sommes partagé le travail de traduction pour aller plus vite. Cela nous a pris un peu de temps pour trouver notre système, mais aujourd'hui on est une machine bien rodée.

5)   Have you sometimes wished you had written a scene that the other wrote or that you had written from the other's perspective (even though the book is written in the 3rd person narrative and that you both shared the characters in most chapters)? Have you guys ever disagreed on something that happened to the characters in a chapter?  /  Auriez-vous aimé écrire une scène que l'autre avait écrite ou écrire de l'autre point de vue à un moment donné de l'histoire (même si le livre est narré à la troisième personne et que vous avez partagé les personnages dans vos chapitres respectifs à plusieurs reprises) ? Avez-vous eu des désaccords sur des choses qui sont arrivées aux personnages ?

CJ: We try to be honest with each other (POLITELY). Nobody’s perfect all the time, and we have each, at one point or another, gently told the other that their chapter wasn’t there yet. We’re both pros, so we can take criticism. I’m not saying it doesn’t sting, but it’s part of the business, and we both know that. Usually, when we have to criticise each other’s work, we soften the blow by making suggestions that could improve the chapter, and this really helps. In most circumstances, authors write an entire book before they get feedback from an editor. With us, we can get feedback the same day we write a chapter!

And I wish I’d written chapter one. Carina wrote that and it’s EPIC.

Nous essayons d'être honnêtes l'une envers l'autre (AVEC POLITESSE). 
Personne n'est parfait et nous avons chacune, à un moment donné, dit 
gentiment à l'autre que son chapitre pouvait être meilleur. Nous sommes des professionnels donc nous pouvons encaisser une critique. Je ne dis pas qu'on est invulnérable, mais ça fait partie du travail et nous en sommes toutes les deux conscientes. Habituellement, lorsque nous avons une critique à faire de notre travail respectif, on modère nos propos en apportant une suggestion qui pourrait améliorer le chapitre, et ça aide réellement. La plupart du temps, les auteurs écrivent un roman entier avant d'avoir un retour de leur éditeur. Entre nous, on peut avoir un retour le jour même où on écrit le chapitre !
Et j'aurais adoré écrire le premier chapitre. C'est Carina qui l'a écrit et il est ÉPIQUE !

6)   What part are you most looking forward to the readers reading ( No spoilers!) /  Quelle partie attendez-vous avec impatience que les lecteurs lisent ? (Pas de spoilers !)

CJ: The section when Taylor goes to Paris!! That is my favourite part of the book.

La partie où Taylor va à Paris !!! C'est ma préférée dans le livre. 

7)   If you could be a character in the book which would you be and why? / Si vous pouviez être un des personnages du livre, lequel choisiriez-vous et pourquoi ? 

CJ :LOUISA. Because she is AWESOME.

LOUISA. Parce qu'elle DÉCHIRE.

8)   If you could choose a song to be the theme song for The Secret Fire which would it be? / Si vous pouviez choisir une musique qui devienne le "générique" (une chanson emblématique, comme pour un film/une série) de The Secret Fire - Le Feu Secret, laquelle serait-ce ?

CJ: ‘Don’t Put Dirt on my Grave Just Yet’ by Hayden Panettiere.

9)   I love Alchemy, I love the idea, I love reading about it, I'd love to go back and see alchemists at work...So if you could go back and experience a different era which would it be and why? / Si vous pouviez voyager dans le temps et faire l'expérience d'une autre époque (celle des alchimistes, par exemple), laquelle choisiriez-vous et pourquoi ? 

CJ: The 1920s. Specifically 1927. Before the crash. When anything was possible and the champagne was flowing. 

 Les années 20 et 1927 précisément. Juste avant le krach. Lorsque tout était possible et que le champagne coulait à flots.

10)   Would you say that going back on the co-writing process for book 2 is like riding a bike? / Diriez-vous que retourner à la co-écriture pour le deuxième et dernier tome, c'était comme refaire du vélo ?

CJ: It was certainly easier than book 1, as we already had our system in place, and it was just a matter of putting our brains together and letting the book magically appear!

C'était définitivement plus simple que d'écrire le premier tome puisque nous avions déjà notre système bien en place. C'était juste une question de remettre nos cerveaux en marche et en concordance et de laisser le livre apparaître comme par magie !
