Book Review: Guards!Guards! by Terry Pratchett

Review: Well here we on on the next step of the Terry Pratchett Blog tour and welcome, today you fine ladies and gentlemen have the fine opportunity...nay DUTY of joining the city Watch! Least that how it probably sounded to Carrot...and you don't really have to join if you don't want to, and who would! And I'm probably not making my sense and that's good! Because that's what you get with Terry nonsensical sense! 

Here we are eight books into the Discworld world, and the first main introduction to the Watch the somewhat something police force that waddles about shouting "It's midnight and all is well". So in many ways it's a crime novel and yet its not because nothing is every really one thing on the disc, and there's sooo much packed into each novel its so many more things than the thing which it thingy. 

I've been re-reading this from my dinky small paperback and I love the feel of it, the smell of the paper, I love how easy I'm flying through it....I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK. There's sooo much packed into every page so the world that Pratchett has created is built and built and made deeper with each page, and that's amazing.  You could say that there's a tendency to over add with jokes and commentary but you soon realize that that's the way Terry writes and you fall into it and don't come out. I've been laughing at my desk...on the train..on the street, just all the time basically because I love the whit. And he's managed to do this for every character. They all shine strongly on their own and when I read through the books, the thoughts and feelings and understandings I have for each of them rise to the surface so easily each time the come into play which is a fantastic thing when you think about the number of characters in each book! That's one of the many strengths that exist within this series, even now I have a tendency to want to type in block capitals...don't worry you're not dying...

Oh and I should probably talk about the book itself. Notice I haven't mentioned the cover, which i'm itching to do, but I'm saving it for my cover love video on the 19th so WATCHTHISSPACE....But the book... A dragon is on the loose, and it's become the duty of captain Vimes of the Watch and his recruits to solve the case. There also the issue of Carott, a law onto himself, the Patrician and the Elucidated Brethren to contend with... and DRAGON DRAGON DRAGON, I love a good dragon, and there are loads here from Erol to the big bad dragon ravishing the city, just not the virgin on the rock like it should be The book, like many is funny, Vimes is a good character and I like his story, and like I said you get so many elements of so many different stories in here with different characters popping in and, with the mythical/fairytale allusions, monarchism, that it become this great big thing in this tiny books. I do like how there is a central parody like theme to a lot if not most of the books that gives it a loose structure and lets it go off on its on cray tangent. ....

This is a great Discworld starting point in a number of ways, with the intro of the Watch and we still get a lot about the Disworld universe if you're just coming to it. I've enjoyed going back to this, I almost want to go back to all the books and re-read them, but I have to go forward and I'm excited for the journeys to come. I've had a tendency to HAVE to read the books in numeric order and I'm only on about 17 so I've lots and lots more adventures to come which I can't wait for!
