Book Review: You Had Me At Hello By Mhairi McFarlane

Name: You Had Me At Hello
Author: Mhairi McFarlane
Publisher: Avon

Summary: What happens when the one that got away comes back?

Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart.
It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away.
From the moment they met they’d been a gang of two; partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on. Ben is married. Rachel is definitely not. In fact, the men in her life make her want to take holy orders…
Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend.
If you love David Nicholls and Lisa Jewell then this is the book for you. Hilarious, heartbreaking and everything in between, you’ll be hooked from their first ‘hello’.

Review: It was either just before Christmas or just after. I kept seeing this book advertised and I ummed and awwwed for a little while. Whilst I was flicking through ibooks alongside Twitter I noticed that 'You Had Me At Hello' was actually 99p to purchase. Still without a kindle I am reading the odd book on my iPhone. What the hell did I do before my iPhone.
For me Avon are kicking some butt with the feel good reads at the moment, as you can see by my reviews I recently read 'The Baby Diaries' from Avon and here I am again with another of their books.
I honestly don't know where to start in reviewing this book, how can I say anything that gives 'You Had Me At Hello' justice. I was told that this book would test my emotions and boy did it do that. Rachel is the perfect heroine in my eyes and in some aspects she kind of reminds me of me.
The fact that she is a journalist really hit home for me having studied journalism, it was great to get a real insight to the day to day life of a journalist. The characters you meet along the way like Gretton and Zoe. What surprised me the most in this, the ones you trust aren't always worth giving your trust to. Rachel learnt the hard way, but that is because she is a moral upstanding citizen. YES, I can hear the small voices saying are journalists ever like that and I believe they are. Rachel is the sort of journalist that I aspire to become.

How would you feel if you bumped into the love of your life years later? Do any of us ever realise that the love of our lives have gone until it's too late.

Ben and Rachel took me on an emotional rollercoaster, I went through every single emotion, each lunch break was too short and bus journeys went by in a flash. I was mesmerised by their tale of friendship and love. Not to mention the dramatic twists and turns just when you thought you knew what was what, and who you liked and disliked bam....all change.
This novel will have you reminiscing and thinking of your own life and you will be well and truly sucked into the turbulent world of Ben and Rachel.
This book will take over each and every thought, I now kind of wish I had a physical copy as I would definitely be lending it to everyone and anyone. I just could not put it down, a truly addictive read.
The way Mhairi writes is just pure and utter genius, I would love to see her return to Ben and Rachel's turbulent story again in the future and I look forward to what is next from yet another fantastic author.
The storyline will have you on the edge of your seat this novel offers you so much, and Mhairi is focusing on real life issues that we all come across every single day of our lives.

All I will say is give You Had Me At Hello a read, it is well worth whatever you pay for it you seriously will NOT be disappointed.
