Review: Sam Binnie won the 2005 Harper's/Orange prize short story competition, and The Wedding Diaries is her awesome debut novel.
The Wedding Diaries is such a feel good, light-hearted read, where you can escape the outside world and live the slightly mad life of the loveable Kiki Carlow.
Kiki is funny, mad and says how she feels, reading this book has made me want to start writing in my journal again. (Which I have in part although I need to make it a regular thing, I'm a little behind eeek)
What I loved about this novel is that it's real to life, it's the sort of stuff that any of us would write in a diary, and for an event like a wedding it's good to remember all the small things, since reading this novel I have found out that my pregnant sister has been writing down bits and pieces about her pregnancy, she's even written a letter for my niece for when she is older.
The novel features emails and messages that Kiki recieves along the way in preparation for her wedding and also for work. Kiki works for a publishing company and the book she is working on is Jacki Jones's wedding diary, Jacki is a model/actress living the dream. Or is she?
I also loved that at the end of each month there is a classic wedding from someone it usually focusses on novels like Emily Bronte for example.
Kiki also documents many of her and Thom's conversations and these are always humourous to read.
What I also really liked is that Sam has added wedding ideas at the back along with an extract of her next novel 'The Baby Diaries' which sounds just as laugh out loud funny as 'The Wedding Diaries' I cannot wait to see what Kiki does next.
I look forward to reading many more awesome novels from Sam.
